Healthy Airplane Snacks to Pack for Your Next Flight
Healthy Airplane Snacks to Pack for Your Next Newark Flight
You’ve been good about sticking to your diet, but now you’re becoming a little anxious before your flight. Everyone knows there’s an enormous amount of food available at the Newark airport, but most of it will set you back in calories, fat, sodium, cholesterol and preservatives.
Rather than throwing your hands in the air and assuming that you have no control over the situation, it’s time to take charge. With a little forethought and creativity, you can pack healthy snacks for traveling. Not only will you feel better about what you put in your body, but you’ll reach your destination with more energy and less unhealthy food fostering fatigue.
Healthy Travel Snacks to Munch On
Some favorite, healthy snacks for air travel include:
- Fruits and veggies. They can be purchased at your local grocery store already pre-cut, or you can cut them yourself to save money. Store them in a plastic baggy in your carry-on. Although you can always carry dip or spreads to add, be cautious. Some types of dips, like hummus, can have a strong smell. Your seatmates might not appreciate your choice if it smells strongly of onions or garlic.
- Homemade trail mix. Forget store-bought trail mix that’s loaded with hydrogenated fats. Make your own trail mix, instead. Throw in nuts, whole wheat pretzels, dried fruits and maybe even a few mini-marshmallows or chocolate chips. You’ll be satisfied, and you’ll never have to wonder about what you’re tossing into your mouth.
- Sandwiches. When did everyone move away from making sandwiches, pure and simple? Add anything to your sandwich, from ham and cheese to a veggie wrap. Make sure you store your sandwich in a package that will keep it cool if needed, such as an insulated bag that will protect meats from spoiling. For an added boost of nutrition, use wheat bread, pita or wraps.
- Nutrition bars. These shouldn’t be your first choice, but they are better for you than some of the alternatives you’ll find while walking the concourse. Only pack ones with enough protein and make sure they aren’t candy bars in disguise.
If All Else Fails, Opt for Nutritious Airport Snacks
If you ran out of time to pack healthy snacks for your trip to the Newark airport, don’t worry. You can still make good choices at the Newark Airport. Opt for whole foods, like fruits or beverages made with no added sugars or flavorings. You’ll feel good, and you won’t have to make excuses about killing your diet while traveling!
